Week I: Comfort Foods with a Moroccan Twist


Welcome to “The SOUK”; Season 3, Week I; January 10th, 2016.

Below is a list of vendor offerings for this Sunday.

Please note these items as additions to regular menus: Spicy crab soup (Roost), chicken pot pie (Mimi’s Plate), The Florence stuffed bread (Maria’s Biscotti & Gourmet Edibles), vegetarian lentil soup (NoCo) & a selection of vegan soups, salads, Caribbean patties & vegetarian samosas (La Talaye). Also of note is a surprise and much welcomed new vendor to the market, Nahmias et Fils, maker of Mahia, the national spirit of Morocco, detailed below.

Breads, muffins & viennoiserie.

Dan Madura Farms:

Local Home Grown Produce from the black  dirt  region of NY! Exotic mushrooms: Maitake (hen of the woods),  Shiitake, Yellow & Grey Oyster, King Oyster, Pioppini, Lion’s Mane,  Beech, Crimini, & Portobello’s.

Dutch Girl Cheese:

Raw milk cow, sheep & goat cheese.

The Little Bake Shop:

Gluten-free and regular pastries, pies and  cookies.

Luxx Chocolat:

International Chocolate Salon award winner 2015 Best Chocolatiers & Confectioners in America.

Maria’s Biscotti & Gourmet Edibles: 

Stuffed breads.  16 varieties.   Introducing “The Florence”: Baby spinach & artichokes, topped with pecorino romano and honey drizzle.

La Talaye Catering:

Soups (all vegan) – Green lentil curry, butternut squash-sweet  potato kale, black bean stew & three-bean chili.

Super-food quinoa salad, Caribbean slaw, pickles & marinated chickpeas, beets & onions.  

Caribbean patties (vegetarian and organic beef).

Vegetarian  samosas (potato and peas).

Mimi’s Plate:

Chicken pot pies.

Nahmias et Fils, the Water of Life:

Mahia: This national spirit of Morocco is handcrafted in the Hudson Valley. Nahmias et Fils is the only source for locally-produced award-winning Mahia in the U.S. inspired by a 1900 heirloom Nahmias family recipe from the village of Taznakht, Nahmias Mahia. Regularly toasted in Casablanca as the most exceptional in all of Morocco. Mahia is to Morocco as Tequila is to Mexico.

Legs Diamond  Whiskey: 100% organic rye sustainably grown from local farms. Named after celebrity Prohibition bootlegger and gangster Legs Diamond  who enjoyed life and spirits, good whiskey and rye.  His nickname “Legs” was inspired by his dancing talent and ability to elude enemies. While the turbulent times of Legs Diamond’s life in the 20’s and 30’s wasn’t peaceful, the spirits did bring calm to many.

Northern Comfort Catering  (NoCo):

Pulled pork sandwiches, corn  souffle, beef brisket chili & vegetarian lentil soup.
